Congratulations:
My heartiest congratulations to Prof. Tsong Yueh ("T.Y.") CHEN, Swinburne University of Technology, for the selection by ACM for the SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award 2024, the most prestigious award in Software Engineering.
The Nomination:
I feel humbled and honoured that ACM accepts my nomination of T.Y. for the award, "for contributions to software testing through the invention and development of metamorphic testing". I am indebted to Prof. Alastair Donaldson of Imperial College London, Prof. Rob Hierons with University of Sheffield, and Prof. Davy Towey with University of Nottingham China Campus, for their strong endorsements of my nomination.
The Awardee:
T.Y. received the M.Phil. degree from The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the M.Sc. degree and the DIC from Imperial College London, and the Ph.D. degree from The University of Melbourne.
He served as an Associate Professor in HKU before migrating to Australia. He also served as the Acting Head of Computer Science for one year.
The Achievement:
T.Y. invented metamorphic testing (MT) in the late 1990s.
It tackled "untestable" programs by leveraging on relations among multiple inputs and outputs.
Persistent with its development, he inspired hundreds of studies by follow-up researchers.
MT is currently a recognized means to enhance traditional test case generation techniques.
It has evolved beyond software testing — to program proving, debugging, and numerous software engineering applications.

The 2010 paper titled
"Adaptive Random Testing:
The ART of Test Case Diversity"
by Prof. Tse and team has been selected as the
Grand Champion of the Most Influential Paper Award
by the
Journal of Systems and Software.
The journal is ranked by Google Scholar as the
second in h5-index
among international publication venues in software systems.
A retrospective of the significance and influence of the
2010 article is available in the 2021 blog post titled
"Diversity, Diversity, Diversity:
Three Words that Summarize the Impacts of Adaptive Random Testing",
which has received 1.6K claps from supporters.

Prof. Tse and team proposed the innovative concept of
"metamorphic robustness testing"
and applied it to verify the citation indexing systems
Scopus
and
Web of Science.
The results, published in
IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering
and presented in
ICSE 2020,
revealed that the presence of hyphens in paper titles
inadvertently reduces the citation counts and journal impact factors.
The surprising findings attracted the attention of the international media,
including
ScienceAlert,
Nature
Index,
Communications of the ACM,
Psychology Today,
The Australian,
and
Wikipedia.

Prof. Tse served as the
intermediary
of generous donations of
$140 million to The University of Hong Kong for the establishment of the
Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wings I and II.
He is currently a Management Committee Member of the Inno Wings.

Prof. Tse's teacher effectiveness score at HKU in 2022/23 was 94.4%,
and his course effectiveness score was 93.1%.
